Mobile Production Unit

It is a vehicle whose size varies according to its possibilities. “The range of possible OB van designs is very wide, especially since the introduction of ENG and EFP handheld cameras, which is not surprising considering the variety of programs produced on location including news, sports of all kinds, ceremonies, concerts, theatrical performances, religious acts, etc.” 2 In this way, you can find mobile units with a single camera with limited possibilities, to vehicles that house all the technological facilities of the central studios. Mobile units are usually commissioned to order, so it is practically impossible for two to be the same.

The production units are basically equipped with the following technological equipment:

1- Cameras with their corresponding camera controls, tripods with crabs -wheels that facilitate mobility- and camera cables of different sizes.

2- Production control with image mixer and digital effects generator.

3- Sound mixing desk.

4- Turntables, magnets, microphones of various sizes and characteristics, sound cables, earmuffs and all the equipment that may be needed for good sound capture during the broadcast.

5- Videos and video switches that allow selecting the camera to record in each video recorder.

6- Panel of monitors to control the quality of the signal of the images and loudspeakers to control the quality of the sound that is being aired or that is being recorded.

7- Connection boxes for microphones and telephone lines.

8- Generator set (can be incorporated into the vehicle or on a trailer). Electric power supply hoses.

9- Communication systems: telephones, wires, earmuffs, etc.

10- Air conditioning and heating system.

The necessary and basic human team to carry out the work within a mobile production unit is as follows:

1- Director.

2- Realization assistants, where the mixing technical assistant is included.

3- Producer and possible production assistants.

4- Video editors.

5- Sound technician.

6- Sound editors.

7- Camera control.

8- Camera operators.

9- Camera assistants.

10- Electronic technicians and technological maintenance personnel.

11- Unit manager.

12- Unit assembly personnel.

13- Unit driver.

The mobile production units must have the following characteristics:

1- It is important to take care of the interior design of the realization units. The limited space available can cause a feeling of claustrophobia, especially if the team has to work inside the unit for many hours at a time.

2- All devices must be easily accessible by operators and maintenance technicians.

3- The air conditioning must be effective, especially when many of the workers smoke and on particularly hot days. All equipment must have forced ventilation so that they can maintain their normal operating temperature.

4- They must be as soundproof as possible from outside noise.

5- The ceiling must be prepared to be able to install a camera on it. It must be reinforced to support weight and, in addition, it must have an access ladder.

6- All equipment must be able to hold on to avoid problems when moving.

7- They must have as much space as possible for storage of cameras, cables and other accessories.

8- They must be equipped with all the necessary equipment for the live broadcast or to record the event.

9- It is very important to take care of the communication systems in a mobile unit. These should work whether it is moving or stopped. In addition, they must withstand inclement weather. 3

Ignacio H. de la Mota (1981), classifies the mobile production units according to their size and use in the following four types:

1- Large mobile units: the large or trailer units are used for television recordings in very distant exteriors of the studies. They are true mobile production studios. They are equipped with a conventional production control with complete sound and image equipment and seven or eight cameras. The material can be sent to the central nba중계 broadcast center by microwave for direct broadcast or recording.

2- Medium mobile units: they are normally used in sports outdoor electronic production and even in news. They are equipped with a small control room with the complete conventional equipment for about five light cameras and have the basic means for connecting and mounting the sound. The material can record it or emit it through a microwave link to the emitting center.

3- Light mobile units: they are small vehicles. They are used outdoors for sports competitions, electronic journalism and for advertising work. They are equipped with a maximum of two light television cameras and a small video recorder, as well as a control cabin and devices to mount a camera on the roof of the car or on a rear platform. The material can be recorded or sent to the base station or to another larger mobile unit.

4- Super light mobile units: They are the classic vans used basically in the realization of news reports. They are equipped with a portable recorder and one or two cameras that send audio and video to the vehicle via cable or a small microwave transmitter. The material can be recorded or sent to the issuing center by means of a relay station.

As can be seen in this classification, the size of the mobile units depends on the use to which they are going to be put, that is, depending on the productions to which each of them will be used.
