Do you know that in 2021 global electric car sales reached approximately 6.5 million? Yes, the whopping number of electric car sale is the result of rising fuel prices and a global effort to curb the carbon emission. With the increase in the sale of electric vehicles, there is a rising demand for the EV charging stations. On the back of this, the EV charging stations infrastructure market is also anticipated to grow in the upcoming future. In this article let us understand what is an EV charging station, it’s types, and benefits?

What is an EV charging station?

An EV charging station is an equipment which connects the source of electricity to the electric vehicle (EV) to recharge the cars. These EV charging station incorporates advanced features such as, cellular connectivity, smart metering and network connectivity.

Types of EV charger plug?

The Electric Vehicle charging station can be broadly classified as DC charging and AC charging devices.

DC chargers’ types & sockets-

  • CHAdeMO- This has originated in Japan and the most popular DC charger in the world. This type is charger is vastly used in Japan and Korea. Furthermore, the japan electric vehicle (EV) charging station infrastructure market is growing owing to the rising government initiatives.
  • Tesla super charger- The prominent company Tesla has its own supercharger. The company also sales adapters for connecting to a CHAdeMO charger.
  • GB/T- This type of charger is prominently used in the China and India.

AC Chargers’ types and sockets

  • Type-1 with Yazaki socket- The maximum power output is up to 7.4 kW and prominently used in USA and Japan.
  • Type-2 with mennekers socket- The maximum power output is up to 44 kW and popular models in Europe and Germany Electric Vehicle (EV) charging station infrastructure market.
  • Type-3 with Le grand Socket- The power output is upto 22 kW ( 32 ampere). The charger is popular in France and Italy.

Combined (AC & DC) Chargers

  • SAE Combined Charging System (CCS)- These can generate upto 400 kW DC and 43 kW AC. This charger has CCS-1 and CCS-2 versions available. It is used in most of the European cars such as, audi, BMW, Ford and Porche.

Categories of EV charging stations

There are prominently 3 categories of charging stations used in the world in the global Electric Vehicle (EV) charging station market:

Level 1 electric vehicle charging station

The level 1 EV chargers use a 120 volt AC plug that can be easily plugged into a standard wall outlet. These types of EV chargers are often used at home and cheapest amongst all the available charging stations. Although, the level 1 charging stations consume the largest amount of time to charge vehicle’s battery.

Level 2 electric vehicle charging station

These types of chargers are both residential and commercial. The residential charger utilises a 240V AC plug while the commercial charger utilises 208V AC plug. These EV chargers requires a proper installation and delivers 15 to 60 miles of range per hour of charging. These charging stations can charge up the electric vehicles just in 2 hours.

Level 3 Electric Vehicle Chargers

These chargers are also known as DC fast chargers and have CHAdeMO and CCS2 connectors. They offer just 40 minutes of charging time and upto 110+ miles of range for the electric vehicle. The level 3 charging stations require very high-powered and specialised equipment. Also, not all the electric vehicles support charging with level 3 chargers.

Benefits of installing EV charging station for business purposes

  • Appeal to employees

Suppose an office premise consist of electric vehicle charging station. Employees would love to charge their electric vehicle during the working hours. It would add a positive impact and raise inclination towards eco-friendly behaviour.

Governments in various countries are giving tax rebate on installing electric vehicle charging stations in the premises. This encourages more people to purchase electric vehicles.

  • Business Goodwill and increasing profits

Including Electric Vehicles in your business forte will increase the goodwill of your company and also increase profit. For example, the china electric vehicle (EV) charging station infrastructure market is thriving because many leading companies are making enormous profits.

Wrapping up,

In the coming years, the number of electric vehicles on the roads is projected to escalate. The supportive government initiatives, rising environmental concern, and aggressively increasing fuel prices are expected to be the prominent reasons to boost the global Electric Vehicle Charging Station market.
